Zapote Bridge: A Historic Icon and Witness to Philippine Valor

The Zapote Bridge stands as more than just a physical structure—it's a testament to the historic legacy and valor of the Filipino people. Serving as a crucial link between the communities of Provincia de Manila and Provincia de Cavite in Las Piñas, this stone arch bridge, built in 1817 under the guidance of Don Agustin Dela Cruz and Padre Diego Cera, carries within its stones tales of resilience and patriotism.

Throughout history, the Zapote Bridge has been a silent witness to the courage and sacrifices made by the Filipino revolutionaries. It bore witness to the historic battles fought on February 17, 1897, where Filipino forces valiantly clashed with Spanish troops, and again on June 13, 1899, when General Artemio Ricarte and Mariano Noriel led the resistance against American forces. These monumental struggles are etched into the very foundation of this bridge, marking it as a symbol of Filipino heroism.

Recognized for its historical significance, the bridge has received multiple accolades and commemorative markers. Notably, in 1952 and 2013, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines acknowledged its role in Philippine history. Moreover, markers such as the "Labanan ng Zapote" Historical Marker by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines stand as silent tributes to the battles fought on this hallowed ground.

The Zapote Bridge remains not only a physical link between two provinces but a living testament to the bravery and resilience of the Filipino spirit, embodying the storied heritage of the nation and serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom.
